Ed Raiter was a very special friend of mine , he was born on October 12, 1944, I know this because my birthday is Octtober 13, 1944. I first met Ed in Kindergarden at Silver Spring School on Green Bay Ave. just south of Villard Ave. We went there thru the 4th grade and then transferred to the 24th street school at 24th and Fairmount Ave , we went there until we were transferred to Edison Jr. High for the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade after that on to Custer we went. Put it this way , I've known Ed all my life. Ed, Dick Boettcher and I went to get our SS numbers on the same day when we were 16 years old, all 3 of our numbers were the same except for the last digit . After school I went self - employed and Ed joined the Marines, he ended up spending 2 terms of living hell in Vietnam . When he returned home it took him a few years to get back to being the same old Ed . He then moved off to California and became a  Deputy Sheriff for Contra Costa County. Over the years Ed and I did keep in touch on the phone  for hours reminiscing , even went out there to visit him once for a week.  Ed had to retire early due to bad healt , some of it was related to Vietnam .

The last time I had talked with Ed things were Finaly starting to go right for him , he was even planing a trip back to Wisconsin for a visit with his sisters and myself. After everything Ed went thru in Vietnam one day he was walking his dog he slipped and fell cracking a vertebrate in his back. Ed died on February 21, 2004 from a blood clot . He was transported back to Wisconsin and buried in his uniform with a Marine Honor Gaurd and was laid to rest next to his Mom and Dad .

Miss you old buddy , you will never be forgotten , RIP  Ed .......
